There is nothing more awe-inspiring than strolling through a garden during springtime. Nature seems to transform overnight, showing off breathtaking blooms, mesmerizing new colors and filling the air with enchanting smells. This year is no exception. Warm weather throughout the Pacific Northwest and Canada has jumpstarted the season with a range of blooms from spring bulbs and perennials to trees and shrubs of every size. Nature has reawakened and with it unforgettable spring colors have abundantly spread across Victoria. Here are our favorite places in the city to check out spring blooms

The Butchart Gardens

Each spring, close to a million people flock to the world-renowned Butchart Gardens, to walk through the breathtaking gardens that feature over 40 types of plants, from classic forget-me-nots to eye-catching lachenalias. One of our favorite spots is the famous Sunken Garden, where vibrant red tulips line flowerbeds and the ground is carpeted with vivacious florals.

Abkhazi Garden

Built in the 1940s, Abkhazi Garden, is beautifully landscaped to highlight the unique beauty of Victoria with native Gary oaks and gorgeous views. Follow the garden path along the South Lawn to admire the natural rock formations Abkhazi Gardens was built around. Spectacular clusters of showy blooms hang from hundred-year-old rhododendrons throughout the Rhododendron Woodland Garden. Continue along the garden’s loop, sneak down side paths and you will find the garden’s three ponds, home to families of resident Mallard ducks.

Beacon Hill Park

Featuring beautiful sparkling lakes and ponds as well as wildlife ranging from great blue herons to duck families, Beacon Hill Park is stunning during every season. However, each spring offers something unique, as the park becomes a sea of blooming flowers, from red and pink rhododendrons to purple crocuses and lush cherry blossom trees. There is something for everyone in your family to enjoy, whether it be horse-drawn carriage rides, a visit to the children’s petting zoo or a quick game at the putting green.

Hatley Park Historic Site

Located down the street from Hatley Castle, Hatley Garden is the perfect place to visit on a warm spring day. Cross over the garden’s beautiful wooden bridge into the Japanese garden where you can admire an enchanting pond surrounded by cherry blossom trees and flowers. A little insider hint, if you visit in May, be sure to check the garden’s large fremontodendron, also known as Mexican flannel bush, near the Italian gardens. The bush will be in full bloom and covered in a spectacular array of large yellow flowers.

Government House

Created in a traditional English style, the Government Houses gardens offer a splendid show of flowers in the spring and summer months.

With 11 unique gardens, terraces, an orchard, a duck pond and an abundance of unique viewpoints, Government House offers a spectacular spot to check out spring blooms. From the Woodlands Viewpoint, you can enjoy an unobstructed view of the 8.5-acre lands. Rhododendron trees towering at an impressive 9 feet fill the park with bright pink flowers. With paths winding from the English Country Garden to the Winter Garden and into the Woodlands, this diverse landscape is exciting to explore.

Horticulture Centre of the Pacific

The Heather Garden is in full bloom at the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific, showcasing a range of purple and magenta flowers. The sight and sound of bees fliting from to flower to flower as they collect pollen is common and be sure to check out one of their fun spring events such as yoga for gardeners, a Mother’s Day soap making workshop or a composting basics class.

Spring can truly be enjoyed all over the city of Victoria, from local parks to famous gardens. Be sure to visit this spring and immerse yourself in the beauty of the season, and all it has to offer.
