Photo: Elm Alyea<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Serving as the entrance to Chinatown, the immense Gate of Harmonious Interest is the perfect place to start your exploration of the neighborhood. As you make your way over to this iconic spot, you\u2019ll notice the neighborhood itself taking shape with shades of red alongside shimmering gold, unique architectural details and strings of lanterns dancing above Fisgard Street. Photo: Behrouz Far<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Distinguishable by nothing more than a slender opening between buildings along Johnson St., it is easy to walk right by one of Chinatown\u2019s most famous landmarks if you don\u2019t know where to look. However, once you cross the threshold of North America\u2019s skinniest street <em>(at its narrowest point it is only 35 inches wide!)<\/em>, you\u2019ll likely recognize the iconic <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tourismvictoria.com\/see-do\/activities-attractions\/attractions\/fan-tan-alley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fan Tan Alley<\/a><\/u> from copious Instagram photos and blog posts.<\/p>\n<p>Stroll between the brick-faced buildings dotted with pint-sized shops as you navigate this whimsical and oh-so Victorian attraction. Pop into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablerecordsbc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Turntable<\/a> to dig the crates, talk music history with their incredibly knowledgeable staff, and walk away with some killer vinyl. Photo: Flickr user Non-Paratus<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On the opposite side of Fisgard is the charmingly kitschy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/dragonalleyvictoria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dragon Alley<\/a>. Boasting strings of twinkling lights, itty bitty free library and Harry Potter-esque street address (532 \u00bd Fisgard Street), this slender passageway is just begging for photo ops. Wander down the meandering brick corridor to experience the rougher parts of the neighborhood\u2019s past fuse with its more refined present.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNarrow passages at each end of Dragon Alley lead to a bright, modern world inside what had been a derelict lodging house for decades. These cramped rooms have since been replaced with spacious three-level townhouses facing the alley,\u201d adds Adams.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Warm up with a cup of Joe in the alley\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionpacificcoffee.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Union Pacific Coffee Co.<\/a>, and stop into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/theemporiumdragonalley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Emporium Dragon Alley<\/a> to pick up a unique keepsake. Photo: Flickr user Beken<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Duck around the corner to the <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.historicplaces.ca\/en\/rep-reg\/place-lieu.aspx?id=14971\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yen Wo Society Building<\/a>,<\/u> and follow the smell of lit joss sticks to fourth floor. Here you\u2019ll find the oldest continuously active Chinese temple in Canada \u2013 the Tam Kung Temple. Built in 1860 to house its namesake <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tam_Kung\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deity<\/a>, the building is the only temple dedicated to Tam Kung outside Asia. With bright red front doors and matching lanterns hanging along its eaves, the brick structure is impossible to miss. However, the building\u2019s design is more than just attention grabbing, its construction actually served a purpose. \u201cThe red tiled roof with its swallow-tail eaves is said to be effective in diverting evil spirits,\u201d explains Adams.<\/p>\n<p>Opened in 1909, the school is a lasting symbol of the Chinese community\u2019s perseverance during a time of segregation in the city. During this era, Chinese-born students were banned from City schools until they\u2019d learned to speak English. Built by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.historicplaces.ca\/en\/rep-reg\/place-lieu.aspx?id=3929&amp;pid=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association<\/a>, the Public School served as a means to ensure the continued education of immigrant children. Down the road from the neighborhood\u2019s official entrance, <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.donmee.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Don Mee Seafood Restaurant<\/a><\/u> has been dishing out a <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.donmee.com\/menu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dizzying array<\/a><\/u> of Cantonese and Szechuan eats for more than 80 years. Settle into a table on the restaurant\u2019s second story for a sweeping view of Fisgard Street, and select your fare as it cruises by you on heated trolleys. Don\u2019t leave the table without sampling their Honey &amp; Garlic Spareribs, and save room for their fluffy steamed cake!<\/p>\n<p>Want something to grab on the go? Look no further than the 130-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/loy-sing-meat-market-victoria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Loy Sing Meat Market<\/a>. Dig into a heaping portion of their flavorsome Chinese barbecue. We highly recommend their famous barbecue pork.
